A weekend trip to Michael’s ended with a Prismacolor Colored Pencils set and a coloring book purchase. Ok, wait hear me out. Life gets stressful as well all know. We get bogged down with work, friends, relationships, even just simple adulting. I heard about the “adult coloring” trend, thought it was cute but ultimately glossed over it. We associate coloring with children but I think it’s important to not restrict ourselves from joy. Whatever it may be, doing a cartwheel, playing a video game or two, watching a Disney movie, you get it.
Coloring generates wellness, quietness and stimulates the brain areas. Even what you’re coloring can have an affect. Crazy right. Psychologist Gloria Martinez Ayala says
The relaxation that coloring provides lowers the activity of the amygdala, a basic part of our brain involved in controlling emotion that is affected by stress.
I don’t know about you, but that’s all I needed to hear. I like to color in my bedroom as you can see here, with some chill vibes from Soundcloud in the background. Or sometimes I lay out on my living room floor with some hot tea and my patio door open to enjoy my breezy neighborhood.
I bought the Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencil Set as a good place to start with a variety of core colors. I’ve used their Illustration Markers before when I’d snag them off the desk of an artist friend of mine. The coloring book choices we’re a bit overwhelming so I’m happy that Prismacolor made it easy. It’s nice to be able to buy the pencils individually but I also appreciate the ease of sets, plus they make good gifts. A quick hack for coloring material is to print online.
